I don’t know of any other DS or Team Manager in cycling
that still has a fan base years after their retirement as a rider.
When you decided to take over Astana, a large group of
Discovery fans became automatic Astana fans.
This was BEFORE any Discovery rider was ever signed
to Astana and it was because of you. That says so much
about your legacy and about how much you mean to so many fans.
Thank you so much for everything you’ve done to keep the
“boys in blue” alive and thriving, even if it’s a different
shade of blue and there is less of it. You are a true inspiration.

All Astana fans had very complex feelings after receiving news of your arrival into the team. It was a mixture of mistrust and hope. But now, when the first joint season has already passed the equator, I think everyone must agree - you managed to withdraw the team from turbulent events in the dignified and respectable place in the cycling world, you managed to maintain and increase team spirit in a very turbulent situation, both inside and around the team. You are continuing to build our team as the best of the world, and therefore Kazakh young guys, those that are already in the team, and those that are going to come into it, will receive an excellent school of extra-class cycling.

What can we say about the Belgian, who glorified cycling in America?
Pro sports director, who won (as athletic director) 8 Tours, 7 with Lance and one with Alberto, additionally, the Giro. All well know about all this.
They had something and everybody knows what it was: the bovine stubbornness and perseverance of Armstrong and the class, real class work of sports director Bruyneel.
It remains only to add that once, Johan himself was a good racer, winning two stages at the Tour, third on GC in the Vuelta, and many other victories. He rode for ONSE (ONCE), which became Liberty Seguros, then Astana-Wurth, and then simply Astana! So the world is close, everything ever caught in the same boat!
